Day 1: A song you like with a color in the title
Song I chose: “Navy Blue” by The Story So Far
This song always hits me deep in the feels. Off of their EP “Songs Of”, this acoustic track follows lead singer Parker Cannon as he recounts a past relationship. Basically, the girl he was in love with moved on and he feels stuck.
The instrumentation is simply beautiful; the acoustic guitar sounds mellow with a subtle cello that hums quietly in the background, but just enough to feel deep in your gut. The simplicity off the instrumentation fits perfectly with Parker Cannon’s courser voice; I think it emphasizes his sadness, in a way. Cannon’s voice holds an amount of anger throughout all of TSSF’s work, but this one carries a pinch of sadness.
Let’s get to the name of the song — “Navy Blue”. He references it later in the song: “My jacket at your sisters’ wedding / Navy blue”. It could simply mean that, yes, he wore a navy blue jacket, but I personally think it has a deeper meaning than that. Since the color blue is often associated with sadness, I think that the point of this song is to make this girl that he’s heartbroken over feel the same way. I mean, he literally says it at one point in the song: “I hope this makes you sad”. Navy blue is a deep shade of blue, which we can then interpret as a deep sadness. Therefore, he wants this girl to feel deep sadness.
All in all, this is such a beautiful song.
